So you want to be a kayak tour guide?

Mayne Island Kayaking is committed to providing high quality experiences for our participants. Our guides and instructors are highly trained and are certified by the Sea Kayak Guides Alliance of BC. Most of our guides are local Mayne Islanders and kayak enthusiats. We believe in providing opportunities for adults in our community to progress in the sport and encourage those that are interested to take on leadereship roles. As a result, we offer an Assistant Day Guide Program and the SKGABC Day Guide Certification Program each Spring.

Assistant Day Guide Training Program - 8 hrs

This program is designed for paddlers who would like to assist with our kayak day tours but are not ready to take the certification program. Program participants learn how to assist tour participants with launching and landing, basic stroke correction, assisted rescues, basic towing skills and basic safety and group management skills. Participants completing the training can participate in day tours and assist the certified guide as required. (Assitant Day Guides are included as a participant in the 1 – 5 instructor participant ratio and are not trained to guide on there own)

SKGABC Day Guide Training Program and Certification – 4 days

This program is an intensive training program for paddlers who wish to lead day trips. The program includes orientations, basic stroke correction and detection, rescue skills, group management skills, towing, navigation, and basic weather forecasting. Technical, leadership and decision making skills are practiced in group scenarios.

Participants take a written and practical exam at the end of the course. Leadership is provided by SKGABC approved instuctors. Particiants must complete Basic First Aid, CPR Level C and the VHF Marine Radio Operators Certificate plus complete the required guideing experience to be certified.

Paddlers completing all the requirements plus our extensive orientation process are ready to lead our day trips.
